The white villages of the southern slope, as a guided day from Granada
Las Alpujarras — A Day in the Villages
The southern slope of the Sierra Nevada holds a chain of villages — Pampaneira, Bubión, Capileira among them — built in a style that belongs to the mountains rather than to Andalusia below: flat clay roofs, chimneys like capped stacks, and streets shaped by water running down them.
This is the region that held out longest after Granada fell, and the last place Morisco life continued in the peninsula. A day here is the clearest way to understand that the kingdom was a territory and not only a city.
