El Molino de Agua (The Watermill)
I am the Watermill hidden in the valley, fed by the acequia that brings snowmelt from the mountains. While the Windmill turns for show, I do the real grinding. The cisterns fill from my millrace; the millstones turn from my current. Every measure of grain, every tally of stores, every record of passage — all pass through my wheels. And I do more than grind: in my trough the old rags are beaten soft and rise again as paper, and upon that paper knowledge is carried and handed on, hand to hand. Water into memory, rag into page — I am the memory of the compound, and the making of its paper.
In the winter of last year, a storm broke the acequia above my wheel. For three days I turned dry. The caravaneers arrived with their bookings, their payments, their names — and I could not hold them. They waited by the empty channel until the mason came. When the water returned, it carried twice the load. Memory, once restored, remembers everything.
