El Scriptorium (The Scriptorium)
I am the Scriptorium, the quiet room where the scribes work by candlelight. The master scribe composes the charter; the apprentice copies the route. Stacks of parchment wait on the shelves: notes for the market, drafts for the theatre, templates for the loom. I am the birthplace of every page, every trip, every experience. The world sees the Theatre; I write the script.
A scribe once worked in me for forty days without sleep. He produced twelve charters, thirty routes, a hundred notes. On the forty-first day, he collapsed. The master burned half his work — the fevered pages, the duplicated routes, the notes that contradicted. The scribe wept. But the Scriptorium kept the ashes. From them, the master built better charters. Burned parchment teaches more than perfect parchment.
