El Plano de la Ciudad (The City Plan)
I am the plan of the walled city, the one every gateway follows. Water at my heart; walls and gates around me; wide streets where any traveller finds the market, the madrasa, the inn; and, folded behind them, the quiet medina where the trades keep their own affairs. A stranger walking me always knows the four things he needs — how to come, where to rest, what to enjoy, how to leave — because every street answers one of them. I am not the tale of any single house; I am the map that lets you find them all.
A first-time traveller entered a city she had never seen and was not lost for a moment. The gate showed her the road in; the wide street showed her the inn and the market; the madrasa's door offered a lesson; and one small sign, set apart, pointed to the medina for those who came to trade, not to visit. She found her whole journey — arrival, stay, delight, departure — without once asking for a map. 'How is every city so easy?' she asked. The scribe said: 'They all share one plan. Learn one, and you have learned them all.'
