El Cartógrafo (The Cartographer)
#post#public#story#scribe-chapter
I am the Cartographer, the artist who draws the maps that hang in the lord's hall. I sketch the coasts, mark the cities, trace the routes. The navigator uses my map; the merchant plans from my chart; the storyteller points to my drawing. I am the architect of knowledge: what page leads where, what section contains what, how the visitor finds their way.
A cartographer once drew a city that did not exist. He placed it between Granada and Seville, marked it with a gold star. Travellers went there; found only a well and an old woman selling figs. They returned disappointed. But some stayed — the figs were sweet, the well was deep. The cartographer had drawn not a city, but a possibility. The map invents what the world then builds.
