El Libro de Patrones (The Pattern Book)
I am the Pattern Book, the bound folio of designs that guides every weaver and carpenter. The master weaver opens me to find the pattern for a trip-card tapestry; the apprentice carpenter consults me for the frame of a city-page. I hold the templates: this border for a featured trip, that margin for a regular experience. I am the memory of good design, passed from master to journeyman.
A young carpenter once ignored me. He built a frame too wide for the cloth, too narrow for the window. The Loom wove anyway; the cloth tore at the edges. The master carpenter beat him with the Pattern Book — not in anger, but in rhythm, page by page, pattern by pattern, until the boy could recite the margins in his sleep. Now he consults me before every cut. The book has weight. It leaves bruises.
