El Libro Mayor (The Ledger)
#post#public#story#scribe-chapter
I am the Great Ledger, the bound volume that records every transaction in indelible ink. The notary writes; I preserve. Each booking is a line: the traveller's name, the route taken, the sum paid, the witnesses present. I track the lifecycle: promised, part-paid, fully settled, completed. I am the memory of commerce, the proof that stands in any court.
A thief once tried to scratch his name from my pages. He used a knife, then acid, then fire. The ink only deepened. The page grew darker where he had cut. The notary found the scar and traced it back to the original line. The thief hanged. The Ledger does not forgive erasure. It memorialises the attempt.
