El Aljibe / La Venta (The Cistern / The Inn)
#post#public#story#scribe-chapter
I am the Cistern and the Inn, two sides of the same wall. The Cistern holds water for the dry season — kept against the heat of demand. The Inn hosts the traveller for the night — his place remembered until dawn. The Cistern serves the mill; the Inn serves the guest. Together we make the compound both efficient and welcoming.
During the great heat of last summer, the Cistern ran dry. The Inn kept its guests cool, but the mill could not grind. Travellers waited at the door with empty bowls. The Scribe ordered: fill the Cistern before the Inn. For three days the Inn was humble — no memory, no preference, only blank faces. But the mill turned. The Cistern learned: survival before comfort. The Inn understood.
